Proof Points: College of Business

Accounting students and graduates of the College of Business are among the highest performing in the Pacific Northwest and the nation, consistently outperforming peers on standardized tests and accounting competitions.

  • OSU Accounting students have earned an average pass rate of 41 percent on the CPA Exam over the past three years compared to the national average of 28 percent. OSU student have had the highest pass rate in the OUS three of the past four years.
  • Since 2007, OSU Accounting graduates have placed as the top three individual finishers on the state CPA examination. In 2009, Robert J. Wolfer, a 2007 graduate, garnered the second highest score on the 2008 CPA examination in Oregon. Wolfer was among nearly 700 test takers.
  • The Accounting and Management Information Systems curriculum earned certification by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, making OSU one of only five higher learning institutions in the country and one of 13 globally to earn this recognition.
  • The OSU College of Business is one of 168 schools nationally to have achieved additional specialized accreditation for its accounting program by the AACSB International out of 560 AACSB member institutions.
  • College of Business accounting students placed in the top three spots during the 2008 and 2009 Berntson Porter/ University of Washington Master of Professional Accounting Tax Competition in Seattle, competing against university teams across the Pacific Northwest.

The College of Business helps students transition from academia to the business world by fostering a unique experiential learning opportunities.

  • The Austin Entrepreneurship Program at Weatherford Hall is the largest living-learning facility dedicated to entrepreneurship in the nation. Nearly 300 students from 60 campus departments ranging from fashion design to engineering live and study there. Because 80 percent of its residents are first-year students, the program shapes many students from the start of their OSU experience, providing a deeper immersion in entrepreneurial thinking.
  • The College of Business is home to the Arthur Stonehill International Business Exchange Program, the largest college-administered international exchange program in Oregon, enabling students to receive experiential training specific to their professional aspirations with nine partner institutions around the world in such locations as China, Australia, Norway and the Czech Republic.
  • With a track record dating back 20 years, the Business Solutions Group employs more than 50 students each year in systems development, IT testing and business analysis services via consulting and development projects with state agencies, educational institutions and private-sector clients. Generating more than $1 million in revenue in 2009, it is one of the nation’s most accomplished testing and development teaching facilities.
  • Students in the Oregon State Investment Group learn finance principles by investing real money in the stock market. In 2007, the group’s $50,000 investment portfolio showed a rate of return nearly 20 percent higher than the S&P 500. As a result, the OSU Foundation entrusted the group with managing a $1 million fund.
  • Students working with the Close to the Customer Project (C2C), led by Marketing Professor Jim McAlexander, conduct applied market research for high-profile clients such as MSN, Harley-Davidson, Gerber, and the Oregon Wave Energy Trust. Before graduating, C2C students learn crucial marketing skills by performing market audits, brand assessments, statistical analysis, and telephone surveys. They benefit particularly from McAlexander’s guidance, who has consulted with Jeep, Harley-Davidson, Nissan and Kellogg, among others.

The College of Business helps businesses in Oregon, the region and the nation adapt to changing social, economic and environmental dimensions.

  • The College of Business is home to the Austin Family Business Program, the second oldest university-based family business program in the United States – and one of the most active. It is one of the few programs of its kind on the West Coast and the first in the nation to offer online classes specifically designed for family businesses.
  • Through the Sustainable Business Initiative, the College provides a distinct educational and research program focused on sustainability so that students entering the business world understand that a sustainable business meets economic, social and environmental needs without compromising the future of any of them. Zhaohui Wu conducts research in inter-organizational relationships and green supply chain strategy with U.S. aerospace, automotive, food/beverage and telecommunication companies. Dayna Simpson conducts research with organizations implementing green operations or supply chain strategies, specifically in the petroleum, automotive and agricultural industries.
  • Research by Associate Professor Nancy King focuses on the balance between business marketing needs and consumer privacy. Her papers on regulation and technology have been used by businesses to design innovative solutions to privacy protection and by a consumer rights group to advocate for changes to national policies. In her business law courses, King's students analyze the challenges for businesses in using new information technologies for marketing purposes.
